The homeless
Hot, nourishing lunches served daily to those with nowhere else to turn.
What began with 20 hot meals in a borrowed restaurant is now a ministry serving hundreds every single day.
Feed My Sheep is a non-judgmental, faith-based program dedicated to providing nourishment to the homeless, homebound, and needy of the Gulfport area. We are rooted in Christian values, but we welcome everyone - no questions asked.
The authority of Feed My Sheep is vested in a board of 12 trustees, and the work is carried out by more than 100 dedicated volunteers who collect donations, prepare food, serve our guests, and keep our facility running.
Feed My Sheep begins as an outreach program of the Gulf Coast Christian Life Center.
The first hot meals are served - roughly 20 homeless individuals are fed from a vacant restaurant.
After several moves, the ministry settles at the Gaston Hewes Recreation Center. That same year, President George H. W. Bush names Feed My Sheep one of America's “1,000 Points of Light,” calling such organizations “the soul of America.”
Hurricane Katrina devastates the Gaston Hewes Recreation Center, halting operations. With the Salvation Army also losing its facilities, Feed My Sheep becomes the only hope of a meal for many in the community.
Feed My Sheep reopens in a new 6,000-square-foot facility at 2615 19th Street, with the capacity to serve up to 400 hot lunches daily plus 350 meals for shut-ins.
The mission continues, one warm plate at a time - powered entirely by donations and volunteers.
